Martin Offiah MBE has been confirmed as the 2015 Pcubed Rugby League Varsity Match Guest of Honour, replacing Shaun Edwards who has had to focus on Six Nations commitments.
Offiah was to be the 2016 Guest of Honour but with characteristic speed off the mark, was quick to see a gap and make sure he went for it.
The news comes as this year’s Battle of the Blues of Oxford and Cambridge Universities is set to grow again. The 35th match between the clubs is in its third year at the Royal Honourable Artillery Company in the heart of London, where it attracts Oxbridge alumni, rugby league fans across the capital as well as City workers and hundreds of chanting students.
The announcement was made by the Varsity Match Director, Mark Ramsdale. He said, “naturally it’s a shame to lose a great speaker and sportsman like Shaun Edwards, but it is typical of Martin to move his schedule and join us a year early. It’s terrific for the event that such great speakers take the time to get involved and support rugby league in Oxbridge.”
Offiah was made an MBE in 1997 and later this year will be immortalised in a statue at Wembley Stadium – where he scored his famous 1994 90m try in the Challenge Cup Final.
He said “I’m very happy to be able to be a part of the Varsity Match this year. I know how important it is for rugby league to be played at Oxbridge and this is one of the biggest Varsity events in the calendar. I have been looking forward to it since I was first asked to get involved and to do it sooner than later is terrific.”
